TROLLIED

All the images in this collection were been taken at the old harbour in Bo'ness. The harbour was a major port in the 18th century, mainly for the local coal industry and some whaling but closed in 1959 with the decline in the mining industry and closure of the nearby railway. The harbour is now disused and full of mud and silt into which discarded shopping trollies have become embedded. As the harbour is tidal these trollies become visible at low tide but become completely submerged at high tide, so timing is critical in capturing the trollies in a semi-submerged state. Many are photographed from a footbridge between the harbour and adjacent dock which allows me to gain an almost aerial viewpoint to shoot from. When people see me pointing the camera downwards over the bridge they often stop and ask what I'm shooting and find it strange that I should want to photograph such an unappealing subject. I often use ND filters and experiment with slow shutter speeds to capture the motion of the water, often as long as two or four minutes which completely smooths the water out and gives it a concrete appearance into which the trollies have been sunk.
